Katherine Keeler

Katherine is a flute, piccolo and music theory teacher with over a decade of experience teaching students of all ages (beginner, high school, university and adult learners) at her private music studio and at schools across Sydney's North Shore, including Pymble Ladies' College, Asquith Girls High School, Turramurra High School, Waitara Public School and Normanhurst Public School.

As a teacher, she is passionate about supporting each student to reach their individual goals, whether playing for leisure or preparing for AMEB examinations and auditions. Her students have been accepted into the Sydney Conservatorium of Music High School, the Sydney Youth Orchestras, the Arts Unit's Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Orchestra, State Music Camp, the Ku-ring-ai Youth Orchestra, and the Northern Sydney Symphonic Wind Ensemble.

Alongside her teaching, Katherine performs as a flautist with the Willoughby Symphony Orchestra and works as a Staff Writer at Kabuku PR, specialising in media relations campaigns for Australia’s leading arts organisations. She holds a Master of Media Practice (High Distinction) from the University of Sydney and completed the Australian Youth Orchestra’s Words About Music program in 2022.

I am a NSW Conservatorium/Sydney University trained graduate (having studied piano with Adene McInnes and voice with Maree Ryan).  I am an accredited Music educator with NESA and the Institute of Teachers, teaching Pre-school to HSC / Highers for over 30 years in Scotland and Australia

I am experienced with very young children (3 years and up) and can also advise and teach adults. I offer lessons in piano, musicianship, theory and voice, as well as tutoring on any aspect of the HSC (Music 2, Extension and Music 1) courses. I enjoy working on all types of repertoire with students from Jazz, to Pop, Australian Music and examination work. For many years my all girls’ choirs won many awards in the City of Sydney Eisteddfod.

For my Masters in Teaching I studied the relationship between Music and Literacy in young children. I have a passion for using singing and immersive techniques (with a Kodaly / Orff approach) to help children develop their own love of making music. Parents of young children are welcome to sit in on lessons.

Piano, Voice, Theory, Musicianship, Music Craft, options: Whether students are preparing for formal examinations, or beginning pianists (young or adult) it is the joy of music making that underpins my teaching philosophy and methodology. My passion for teaching music is grounded in technique and an understanding of musical style and structure. I aim to have each student develop a love of music and reach their full potential.

Both AMEB and Trinity Courses are offered for students wishing to prepare for external examinations. I also teach the AMEB & ABRSM theory & musicianship / Music Craft syllabi. Studio concerts are regular events each year.

HSC senior Coaching: As a retired Head of Music in a leading Independent Girls School in Sydney and HSC Examiner, I am aware of the HSC syllabi requirements. My experiences in HSC preparation means that I am in demand and can assist with Trial HSC Performance Examinations, marking of Compositions and Musicology essays. My HSC students were consistently nominated for Encore (all areas) gaining marks in the top 10% of the state across the 3 courses.

Dr Kathryn Hill

Dr Kathryn Hill is a professional teacher of piano, music theory and music history.

She studied jazz piano with Paul McNammara (1978-79) and classical piano with Elizabeth Green (1978-80) obtaining her A.Mus.A in 1980. She studied at the N.S.W. State Conservatorium of Music from 1981 obtaining her Bachelor of Music (Musicology) in 1985. She completed a Master of Arts (Honours) on 20th century music in 1989 at Sydney University supervised by Dr Graham Hardie and Richard Toop for which she received the University Medal. She then undertook a PhD into the use of popular music on television supervised by Dr. Peter Dunbar-Hall which she completed in 2009

From 1989 to 2004 she taught twentieth century music history, theory and music analysis at the Department of Academic Studies (Sydney Conservatorium of Music) and from 1995 to 2004 two electives ‘Radical Rock’ and ‘Romanticism and the Fantastic’. From 1990 to 1997 she offered Adult Education Courses for both Sydney University’s Centre for Continuing Education and the WEA such as ‘Paris 1900’, ‘Fin-de-siecle Vienna: Connections Music, Art and Literature’ and ‘London in the Swinging Sixties’. From 2001 to 2003 She taught various music history courses including the history of popular music at the Australian Institute of Music.

Since 1989 Kathryn has presented many conference papers and published various journal articles including ‘To f-f-f-ade away?’: The blues influence in Pete Townshend’s search for an authentic voice in ‘My Generation’ in the journal Popular Music History (2014)

Kathryn has continued her studies completing her Associate Diploma (Theory, Harmony and Counterpoint) in 2017 and Certificate of Performance (Piano) and Certificate of Performance (Piano for Leisure) (Hons) in 2019.

She has been teaching piano for some 40 years and continues to enjoy teaching all ages from pre-school to adults. She is currently also teaching online incorporating programmes such as Mobile Sheets, Classroom Maestro, Sibelius, MuseScore, Pro Tools, and Band in a Box to enliven the online experience and encourage student interaction and creativity.

Kathryn teaches the AMEB syllabus for Piano, Musicianship and Theory as well as the Piano for Leisure, Music Craft, Rock School Piano and Popular Music Theory.

Dr Imogen Coward

Dr. Imogen Coward is a Sydney-based scholar-performer and educator, specializing in teaching violin, viola, improvisation, and coaching performance skills for all instruments & voice (both solo and ensemble settings). She is tertiary qualified and a Music Teacher’s Association (NSW) accredited music teacher of violin, viola, piano, improvisation & music theory. An experienced distance educator and assessor, her teaching practice includes both in-person and remote/online music instruction.

Since 2003 Imogen has been in demand as a studio teacher, consultant/coach and workshop presenter. Her students are regularly selected for opportunities and awards including HSC’s ENCORE nominations (performance and composition), Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO) workshops, Opera Australia’s Regional Children’s Chorus, and Sydney Youth Orchestra, as well as gaining university placement (bachelors, masters and doctoral) in Australia and Europe.

Imogen is an active performer, musical director, multi-instrumentalist and singer (featured soloist on the award-winning Canadian film 2BR02B:To Be or Naught To Be dir. Marco Checa-Garcia); and in 2014 she became the founding director of the internationally recognised Australian chamber orchestra Camerata Academica of the Antipodes, dubbed ‘musically combustible’ by Criticks (UK). Her appearances as a soloist include guest artist and speaker for the Solomos Society, and soloist for the University of New England, the Queensland sequicentenary celebrations and numerous chamber music appearances. Imogen has also served as an adjudicator for Ryde Eisteddfod’s string section, and as an adviser to schools’ P&C Associations on the founding and successful development of string group programmes, including for Epping West Public and Pymble Public.

Imogen’s qualifications include: Historically Informed Performance and Improvisation studies, PhD (UNE), B.A. Hons First Class (Music), and Diplomas in Suzuki Violin and Viola teaching. She is the recipient of the Commonwealth Government’s prestigious Australian Postgraduate Award for her PhD studies, the Harold Brissenden Memorial Foundation Fellowship and was made a member of the Golden Key International Honour Society for academic brilliance. Her research on music has been published by Cambridge Scholars Press and the University of Otago, New Zealand. Imogen is an active member of the Musicological Society of Australia (MSA) and regularly presents at international academic conferences.

Dr Geoffrey Gartner

Dr GEOFFREY GARTNER obtained his B Mus (Hons) from Sydney Conservatorium where he studied cello with Georg Pedersen. He possesses Masters and Doctoral performance degrees from the University of California San Diego.

Dr Gartner has over thirty years experience as a teacher and performer and has appeared as a guest  lecturer at universities and conservatoriums throughout  Australia and the USA. He has acted as mentor to many young string players, guiding them through their  LMusA, HSC examinations and beyond. His recordings appear on ten different labels and he performs a repertoire extending from the baroque to the newest works of today, many written especially for him.

A qualified massage therapist, Dr Gartner takes a holistic approach to teaching the cello; correct posture, technique and good practice habits are fundamental to students enjoying their cello playing and achieving great results.

Dr Gartner is well experienced as a lecturer in music history, theory and aural and is renowned for his work with emerging composers. He teaches at his Woollahra studio and is currently accepting students of all levels.

Taliesin Coward

Dr Taliesin Coward is a Sydney-based violin teacher, soloist, and musicologist, specializing in teaching violin, and performance skills for musicians (both solo and ensemble settings). He is a tertiary qualified pedagogue and MTA accredited teacher (violin & music theory), and since 2008 has been in demand as a studio teacher, and workshop and ensemble presenter. He is an experienced distance educator and assessor, with teaching activities including both in-person and remote/online music instruction. An active performer, Dr Taliesin is noted for his virtuosic performances, and is a multi-instrumentalist and singer, and a founding member of, and soloist with the internationally recognised Australian chamber orchestra Camerata Academica of the Antipodes. His appearances as a soloist also include guest artist for the Australian Society of Composers and numerous chamber music appearances.

Taliesin’s qualifications include: Doctor of Philosophy for his research into the performance skills of virtuoso musicians (UNE); BA Hons. First Class for his research on music interpretation theory, Historically Informed Performance and Improvisation studies (UNE), Studio Pedagogy (Charles Sturt University) and MTA accreditation (violin & theory). He is the recipient of the prestigious Australian Postgraduate Award and his research into violin performance has been published by the University of Otago, New Zealand. Taliesin is also an active member of the Musicological Society of Australia (MSA) and regularly presents at international conferences.
